Eglin Air Force Base

Eglin Air Force
Base is the largest in the continental United States
and one of the largest in the world. The base was
first activated in 1935 and has played an important
role in local economy ever since. Currently, Eglin's
Air Force Development Test Center is host to two
wings - the 46th Test Wing and the 96th Air Base
Wing.
A complete community within itself,
the base accommodates the needs of its service
personnel. In addition to being one of the major
employers in the area with a payroll of more than
$410 million covering 10,400 military and 6,000
civilians, the Eglin Military Reservation provides
thousands acres to the public for hunting, fishing,
boating, canoeing, and camping.
Hurlburt
Field
Located on
Highway 98 near the city of Mary Esther, Hurlburt
Field is the home of the Air Commandos. It is an Air
Force Special Operations Command installation and
home of the 1st Special Operations Wing.
The population of the base
is now 7,000 active duty assigned. Hurlburt's
facilities include short take-off and landing areas
for exercises by both light and heavy aircraft,
personnel and cargo paradrop areas, quick lay-down
non-stop cargo extraction areas, and assault landing
zones used by heavy transport aircraft. Air Force
aircraft of all types use the 150-foot by 9,600-foot
main runway.
